How many of you are working a typical 9 to 5 that pays your bills and nothing more. In fact, you only show up in order to get paid? If you could win the lottery or inherit money you would be out of there? Just writing about the typical J-O-B makes me want to fall asleep. If you are living the 9 to 5 life is it any wonder you are just going through the motions?
On the other hand, you could have no job. You may be depending on others to live day to day. There are many reasons for being jobless including health issues/physical limitations, getting laid off, mental health issues, and more than a few other reasons. The world looks dim from this perspective. As you begin to think about how you might you get a job; fears, worries, and doubts pile up so high; overwhelm overtakes you.
Perhaps you are setting out to work for yourself or searching for that ideal job. You are hopeful that your new job will work out. You are honing in on your niche or are not sure what direction you may go. You could also be working for yourself but hating every minute of it. You are exhausted and would rather focus on something less draining.
From the outset, each of these scenarios seem completely different. However, I can promise you that all of the scenarios have the same basic theme – lack of passion. Existentialists call it lack of meaning. I call it adherence to values/beliefs/programming that do not work for you.
One of my favorite stories of passion is the story of Martin Scorsese. Martin is reported to have been story boarding and directing way before he got paid for it. One day someone finally said to Martin – “hey, you know you can get paid for that”?!. Just imagine being in the space of loving your work so much you would do it for free. How do you feel when you picture that scenario? Does your load feel lighter? Leave all fear and doubt behind and imagine making money from your passion. If you can get into that head space you will see there is nothing greater.
Today, I want to challenge you to begin to look for your passion. Read books/take tests that uncover your personality. You can also answer some questions like do you love working in an office or outdoors? Can you manage your own standalone business or do you need to get experience elsewhere first? Whatever you choose, your choice should invigorate you. Working on/at your job should not be a chore.
One final word is you may work up to your passion. What you choose today may not be the job for you for the rest of your life. It will not be a waste, however. The skills you learn today will help you tomorrow. The most important thing is to begin doing something today. Do something each day. As you step out in faith, more and more ideas and opportunities will come your way.
To finding meaning!
