To some extent, all of us want to get ahead and succeed. We all have different beliefs on how to be successful. Growing up, I received conflicting messages: be successful, but don’t outshine others. After a while, I knew that to be successful, outshining others would be required. From a big picture view, we all outshine others in some way. Every person I know has a talent that others do not seem to have. For example very few of us will be amazing athletes like Emmit Smith, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson. Do you suppose these men and other great athletes sit around being afraid of being too good? Probably not.
So if you are going to be great, you have to rise above. It is lonely at the top sometimes, but it is also satisfying to use your time and talent for something you are passionate about. The next time you feel like rising up, try it out. If you are not passionate enough to sustain your endeavor, that’s fine. Every endeavor you undertake teaches you skills for your next endeavor. One day you will find something you are passionate about and you will have acquired all of the tools you need to move on to greatness.
So what if you want to rise and others are trying to keep you down? You really have to decide that it’s worth it to not achieve your full potential. If you can stay in a small space – terrific, enjoy it! If you want to rise further, you may go it alone for a while. Your journey may be scary at times. You may feel completely alone at times when you need someone. It turns out that being alone doesn’t kill you. Eventually you get through all the rhetoric and B.S. and find yourself on solid footing. Be true to yourself. Be authentic. Be brave enough to rock this world like no one else has!
