As a lifelong seeker of solitude, I am aware of the benefits being in solitude can bring.  As I am writing this, the world is seeking a few weeks off from mass meeting.  Many places of employment and schools are ceasing to meet aside from essential onsite staff.  I rather think the time off will give others a chance to get to know themselves and find a deeper connection with life and the earth.

While the world waits for the coronavirus to settle down, I want to suggest 7 ways to benefit from solitude.

  1. It’s hard to hear over the hustle and bustle of day to day life.  So many internal thoughts and feelings get pushed aside in favor of accomplishing goals.  Use solitude as a way to hear and process your thoughts and feelings as they arise.
  2. Use moments of solitude to listen to silence and let the oneness of nature and feelings of peace flow through your body and mind.
  3. Listen to your heart’s desire while you have down time.  What experiences are you longing to have?  What goals do you want to accomplish in your lifetime? What dreams do you want to move towards?
  4. Use solitude as a means of recharging.  Sit out in nature and take the sights, sounds, tastes, and all of the other experiences and sensations in.
  5. Reconnect with people you have lost touch with.  Email, call, FB, and/or write people you have not been able to catch up with but have been meaning to.
  6. Complete those household tasks you have had to put off.  Hang pictures, fix the leaky faucet, paint your bedroom.  Use this time of solitude as a time to catch up on lingering todos.
  7. Get some quality time in with yourself/family.  Play solitaire, pull out board games, brush up on your Wii serve.

All the best!
